Vacuum Leaf Blower & Grinder Bosch ALS 30 – Complete Test and Review

After having previously tested the ALS 25, we are back this time for the test of its big brother, the Bosch ALS 30 vacuum leaf blower-crusher. Often on sale, this leaf blower gets a lot of positive reviews on the web, but is it deserved? We wanted to find out for sure, so here’s a full-scale test of this vacuum-blower.

Presentation of the Bosch ALS 30

The arrival of autumn invariably heralds the arrival of dead leaves. Falling by the hundreds, this seasonal debris quickly invades every cm² of outdoor space. Bosch, the specialist in tools that make home and garden maintenance easier, is leading the market for vacuum leaf blowers with a new instant pick-up solution. The SLA 30 presents itself as the must-have of the autumn, guaranteeing relief from those tasks that one otherwise starts with little enthusiasm. Among the brand’s models, the ALS 30 is the most popular, and is among the best performing devices in its price range.

The Bosch reference is equipped with a 3000 Watt motor, making it one of the most powerful vacuum blowers in its class. The machine records a suction flow rate of 800 m3 per hour, with a blowing speed of 300 km/h. This beautiful capacity makes it possible to remove dead leaves in a fraction of a second, even the most recalcitrant ones. The Bosch ALS 30 is not afraid of dead leaves and treats them with disconcerting ease. The shredding function encourages composting and makes it easier with a shredding ratio of 10:1. The debris collection bag has a capacity of 45l, a fair average that gives the possibility to pile up green debris without the need to empty the container at any end of the field.

The main structure, designed to be practical, has a compact and ergonomic body. Two handles are integrated for easy handling, while the heavy gauge tube meets the opening of the pick-up bag, strategically placed at the bottom. Weighing 3.2 kg in blower mode, the Bosch ALS 30 quickly reaches 4.4 kg when the suction function is switched on. The presence of a shoulder strap simplifies the work of the occasional gardener who relies on this addition to better handle the machine.

Bosch ALS 30 Test

This Bosch reference is presented as an improved version of the SLA 25. The latter, highly appreciated by the public, had quickly established itself as one of the most relevant devices in its category. As a worthy heir, the ALS 30 takes up a large part of its accessories. This is one of the arguments that convinced us to test it. Knowing the performance of the original model, one can only be tempted by a derivative version, especially since the brand promises a higher power output here. The machine offers a vacuum mode, to which a hose is dedicated. This function also justifies the integration of an adjustable handle and a sturdy pick-up bag. The latter is intended to be more practical than competing containers, as it has a practical zip, making it easier to empty. The bag is also designed to collect wet elements or heavy and consistent debris. The waterproof nylon composition suggests that Bosch wanted to offer a more solid, easy to use, and not afraid of contact with more or less aggressive particles.

When used in blower mode, it adopts a blower nozzle, a padded holding strap, and a protective grille to protect it from impacts that may damage its structure. During our test of the Bosch ALS 30 we noticed that everything has been designed to make the handling of the vacuum leaf blower easier. The arrangement of clips on the accessories and the main body of the device are along these lines. In use, however, the device is not easy to handle. While each mode is simple to use, switching from one function to another quickly becomes complex. Indeed, the clips do not simplify the inversion of the tubes. The process is complex, and requires a precision that one cannot necessarily have when one is in a hurry. It’s a shame that the brand didn’t think of developing a more practical, more intuitive system. The ALS 30 therefore requires a certain amount of patience in terms of handling, and very quickly you will be able to juggle between the different modes quickly.

The assembly of accessories can take a few minutes, and does not always fit the needs of a user who wants to do without bulky items. The composition of the tubes can be equally perplexing: although they are presented as unbreakable and non-deformable, they remain fragile in the face of heavy particles. As for the performance of the crusher, it is honourable. His report is more than satisfactory, and has no difficulty in dealing with dead leaves and other green debris. However, like all vacuum blowers, the vanes have difficulty coping with small stones. Lack of performance in the face of consistent debris is not really a problem, but it does limit the aircraft’s capabilities. The user must constantly take care that stones do not accumulate in the unit, as this could damage the internal structure of the unit. NB: This remark applies to any shredder vacuum blower, it is recommended to pile up the leaves to be vacuumed in an area free of any stones.

During our tests, the ALS 30 delivered on all its promises. Comfort is there, even if the suction function increases the weight to be carried. The suitability of the handle and strap reveals its full potential after a few minutes, when the user really starts to feel the weight of the machine in motion. The power of the engine also makes the difference, as you can immediately feel the movements on the suction side. Wearing a noise-cancelling helmet is not too much, and will reduce the feeling of discomfort.

Opinions on the Bosch SLA 30

The ALS 30 delivers performance that will not leave the professional marble gardener in the lurch. If it appears to be primarily intended for repeated use, it will not shy away from occasional use by hobby gardeners. The air flow rate makes it possible to clear 300 m² in no time at all. The real trump card of this blower-vacuum is its surprising power, coupled with 3 particularly well-designed functions. The blowing speed, as well as the suction speed, is an outstanding performance for a household appliance. The quality of the device is noticeable from the very first seconds of use and our opinion of the Bosch ALS 30 vacuum leaf blower cleaner was made at that very moment, and we have also noticed it over time. Despite a wired power supply, the vacuum blower blower will not pose any problems for use in large spaces.

The versatility of the device corrects the lack of intuitiveness in its handling. The latter is undermined by the need to change the tube in each mode. More than one user recognises that the ALS 30 offers optimised operation in all 3 modes. Interchangeable tubes are, however, difficult to handle and do not always simplify the work of their users. It takes time to adjust to it and not be in a hurry. These small defects are corrected by two practical, adjustable and easy to handle handles. The high capacity of the collection bag is also mentioned as one of its main strengths according to Bosh ALS 30 opinions. The German brand offers here a vacuum blower for dead leaves that manages to justify its reputation, and at the same time offers the possibility to recycle the plant waste collected in your garden and terrace.
